Latest Healthy Tip: Sleep Well for Energy and Well Being
For some people, the last thing they want to hear is “you need to take cholesterol lowering drugs”. While cholesterol lowering drugs are usually very effective, making changes to your diet and making time for exercise can contribute to lowering your cholesterol levels. Some physicians do encourage patients with borderline cholesterol levels to make lifestyle changes before cholesterol lowering drugs are prescribed.
Check the label!
When shopping at the supermarket, check the nutrition facts on of the package. Remember, high saturated fats, trans fat and food items which are high in cholesterol all contribute to your overall cholesterol levels which can result in a high LDL cholesterol level.
Make a list!
Make a list of your usual food choices and take it with you when you visit to your physician or make an appointment with a dietitian or nutritionist. By doing this, the foods that need to be eliminated from your diet will be highlighted. Knowledge is power, when you become aware of the foods that need to be avoided, you stand a better chance of maintaining a lower cholesterol level.
Change your diet!
Using foods high in fiber and a generous amount of fruits and vegetables will all be important. With your diet in check, the next step would be to improve your physical activity level.
Get moving!
You don’t have to go to a gym in order to get exercise. Simply walking, skipping, swimming or participating in a game of paddle ball several times a week can help. Before you start any exercise programme, you should consult your doctor. For some, your doctor may advise that you are supervised by a certified personal trainer.
Get regular checks-up!
Your doctor may also recommend that you repeat the cholesterol test within a few months.
Be consistent!
As long as you are consistent with your exercise, make the necessary changes to your diet and take your medicine (if prescribed) - your cholesterol levels should decrease - all you have to do is maintain it!
